ABOUT THE BOOK
On a snowy morning in January 1931, a black Chevy burned on a lonely Tennessee road. By noon, the body inside was identified by his friends as Lytle Boss Bingham—banker, husband, and Sunday school leader. A death certificate was signed. It was a lie.
In Boss Brooks: A True Story of Fraud, Family and Forgiveness from Tennessee to Texas, granddaughter Kathy Bingham Turner and journalist Leon Alligood uncover how Bingham—a small-town banker facing ruin—vanished behind a staged wreck and a stolen corpse, then re-emerged in West Texas with a new name and a second life.
What begins as a Southern true-crime mystery unfolds into a family reckoning—a story of secrets, reinvention, and the women who carried the cost for generations.
Granddaughter Kathy Bingham Turner and journalist Leon Alligood trace the truth behind Lytle Boss Bingham’s deception and the generations it reshaped. Through meticulous research, they follow the paper trail of Boss Brooks, a man who believed he could outrun ruin, and the legacy left by his final confession.

“Family trees are bound to have some tangled roots, but the story that unwinds in the pages of Boss Brooks keeps getting better, in the way only a true story can. Turner and Alligood have connected century-old dots, revealing a powerful picture of the cost of family secrets. If you’ve got one buried, let the light shine in.”Demetria Kalodimos, Executive Producer, The Nashville Banner
“Boss Brooks is a stunning story, beautifully told, of a family’s search for the truth in a web of crimes from nearly a century ago. It is one of the finest true crime stories I have ever read and shows the courage it takes to seek redemption for the acts of our ancestors. This story will haunt you. And it will give you hope.”Philip Lee Williams, author of 21 books and member of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame

“I was lucky to have been able to read the draft of this book. It’s an incredibly fascinating and captivating story; and at times, profoundly heart rending.”Joyce Grizzle
“Told like a true crime novel, the suspense in Boss Brooks builds with every page. With pitch-perfect prose and superior investigative reporting, the story of a man with two headstones unfolds with the ease of a fine silk blanket uncovering the who, what, when and why a man would fake his own death, leaving his beloved family on the brink of destitution, only to start over with another. Equal parts intriguing and infuriating, Boss Brooks ultimately leaves the reader not only satisfied with its message of forgiveness but thirsting for more.”Lisa Patton, bestselling author of Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter
